August 2009 A Note from Pastor Joyce Smothers: Dear Friends in Christ, BIBLE STUDY – THE BOOK OF RUTH The name of God occurs 23 times in the 85 verses of the Old Testament Book of Ruth. God is constantly involved in the story of this young woman – a foreigner, newly arrived in a strange land. Join us for four Tuesday and Thursday evenings of Bible study in late August and early September, in my office from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Free study guides are available; we will read the second half of Above and Beyond, which you already have if you participated in our class on the Book of Jonah. (We have large print editions if you prefer them.) Classes will be held as follows: Guest pastors in the pulpit during my vacation from the 7th to the 17th of August will be Don’t forget to call or email me with your favorite hymn requests! Vacation Bible School was a wonderful success! The group raised $300.55 for the PCUSA Pentecost offering and for the Allentown Rescue Missions’ new After-school program. Many thanks to Debbie Snyder, VBS Director, and the staff – all of them dedicated volunteers. You can see samples of the children’s craft projects on the Christian Education bulletin board. Sunday School will begin at 8:30 a.m. on September 13. A joint youth group, with the First Presbyterian Church of Catasauqua, is being organized as well as a confirmation class for students in seventh grade and up. Please call me at 610-264-9693 if you would like your child to participate in either group. Grace and Peace, Freebee A freebee is available from the Smotherses – Our home computer printer “breathed its last” in June. We replaced it with a different brand. This has left us with about ten unopened Canon printer ink cartridges. These will fit only a small percentage of Canon printers- those which use cartridges that feature a large number six on each box. These cartridges are FREE to a good home – see Joyce or John Smothers. Presbyterian Women Basket Social and Bake Sale The Presbyterian Women will be sponsoring a Basket Social and Bake Sale on October 17th, from 9 to 12. Please save the date. Greeters and Ushers If you are interested in becoming a greeter or usher, please contact Lila Bowman at 610-264-2482. It is a great way to get o meet people that come to our church.
