Pastor Points: Back or Forward?
Back or Forward? It's almost September already! Can you believe it? Summer has flown by, with its break from routines of work and school, meetings, leaf-raking and snow shoveling. Some of us have had a rest and a change of scene. Registration for college classes is starting. School supplies are in stock in every drugstore. Our worship, which has been starting at nine-thirty all summer, wil return to the ten o'clock am starting time on September 12.
Back or Forward? Let me suggest that we aren't going back, at least not here at the First Presbyterian Church of Hokendauqua. We are moving forward, into a future that finds us in a new grade, playing and watching new seasons of sports, seeing new television shows, moving into new assignments at work, and developing deeper relationships in our congregation and our communities.
Back or Forward? At church, we aren't returning to our Sunday School classes. We are starting new ones, with children and teenagers who are a little more grown-up than they were last May. The choirs will have new musicians and new music. (We are actively seeking new Sunday School teachers, youth leaders and choir members; contact Sandy Moran, Sunday School Superintendent, or Joanne Matthews, Worship Chair, if you'd like to get involved.) We have added a contemporary hymnal, Sing the Faith. And the pastor won't rerun old sermons. Each week I will preach a new one.
Back or Forward? On September 26, bring a friend to worship and be inspired by a welcoming service, organized by our Evangelism Task Force. Hear the choir sing, "Here I Am, Lord"! Hear testimonials of faith and become energized for discipleship! In November, we are planning a two-session Inquirers' Class, for those friends of ours (adults) who would like to take a step of making a new committment to Christ by joining this congregation. I will need your help in finding these folks and inviting them to join us.
Back or Forward? On October 3, at 8:30 am parents and students will meet with me for orientation to a one-year confirmation class, for young people in grades 7-12, who would like to join our church family. Students enrolled in the class will meet weekly in my study, on Sunday evenings from six to seven-thirty pm, beginning October 17 and ending in early June.
Back or Forward? In September, we will have a new church newsletter editor, Eileen Tremblay. She has creative ideas, and will appreciate contributions and feedback! Learn more about her plans below. A Time and Talent survey is coming in our September newsletter, with a stamped, self-addressed envelope for each family. Please look into your heart when you receive it, and select an area in which God has bestowed on you a passion for ministry. A single survey form can be completed by more than one person — be sure to label which passion applied to which family member! Yes, our church is moving forward into an exciting future. You won't want to miss it — and we are hoping you don't!

Coming in September...
Beginning in September we are going to try a new format for the Lamplighter, our monthly church newsletter. However, a newsletter can only be interesting and informative if all committees and ministries make sure to submit their upcoming activities to the editor in a timely manner. With that in mind, please feel free to email me everything you would like printed or call me with the information. My email is firstname.lastname@example.org or you can leave a message at my home, 610-261-2012.
I will be happy to type-set your information or insert your own work into the newsletter. If you would to format your own information I will need the information downloaded on a standard flash drive. In order to get the newsletter delivered before the beginning of each month, I ask that all information to given to me no later than the 3rd Friday of every month. As we go along, if you'd like something added or changed please let me know and I will try to incorporate your ideas into the newsletter. I haven't composed a newsletter in a number of years so I ask everyone's patience until I get into the swing of it again.
Thanks for your help, Eileen
Choir rehearsals on Wednesday at 7:30 pm. Rehearsals generally last about 1 hour. We are always interested in having new voices join our already wonderful choir. New members are always welcome. Choir does not meet in the summer, but fall rehearsals will begin on September 8th.
Session and Sunday School will be collecting non-perishable food items to go to our local Food bank. Please place any donations in the boxes in the main hallway and in the sanctuary. Thank you.
