June 2010

Note from Pastor Joyce

Our congregation will worship from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Sundays through Labor Day. The earlier worship time, and the lighter workload of church leaders, provide us with new opportunities for Bible Study.

The Christian Education committee and the Presbyterian Women are providing resources and sponsorship for “Esther’s Feast”, a nine-week discussion series on this Old Testament book, to be held from 11:00 to 12:00 noon every Sunday from July 11 through September 5.

Free study books will be available in regular and large print. The pastor will lead our discussions. Please see her to obtain your copy of the book, Esther’s Feast, by Patricia K. Tull, on or after July 8. Both men and women are encouraged to attend.

We have experimented with evening and weekday scheduling. It seems that Sunday morning is the most convenient time to meet, for the majority of adults in our church – before or after worship.

The 8:30 a.m. Bible study group will continue to meet on Sundays all summer.

I hope you can join us for Bible study this summer. God doesn’t take a vacation from us. The opportunities for growing in faith are as boundless as the summer season!

Blessings,
Pastor Joyce

Books of the Bible

There are names of 16 books of the Bible hidden in the paragraph below. See how many you can find. A preacher found 15 books in 20 minutes, but it took him three weeks to find the 16th one! Have fun!!

Thanks to Gail Rhinehart for sharing this. Our Confirmands found all sixteen books!

I once made a remark about the hidden books of the Bible. It was a lulu, kept people looking so hard for facts and for others it was a revelation. Some were in a jam, especially since the names of the books were not capitalized. But the truth finally struck home to numbers of our readers. To others it was a real job. We want it to be a most fascinating few moments for you. Yes, there will be some really easy ones to spot. Others may require judges to help find them. I will quickly admit it usually takes a minister to find one of them, and there will be loud lamentations when it is found. A little lady says she brews a cup of tea so she can concentrate better. See how well you can compete. Relax now, for there really are sixteen names of books of the Bible in this paragraph.

Help for Our Troops

Master Sergeant Chad Rhinehart (relative of Gail Rhinehart) is currently stationed in Afghanistan. His unit is assisting schools there, and they're requesting help in collecting school supplies and clothing for the Afghan children. Some of the main items they could use are pens, pencils/sharpeners and notebooks. As for clothing, winter clothes are best — shoes, boots, gloves and hats are all good. Boxes are located on the stage in the fellowship room for collection of the school supplies and clothing (including "gently used" children's clothing). Any contributions are welcomed.

Relay for the American Cancer Society

Whitehall’s Relay for the American Cancer Society will take place at the Whitehall Stadium on Fri., June 25th at noon to Sat., June 26th at noon. There will be music, food and fun. The Luminous Service will be Friday night at 9:30.

Food Collection

Session and Sunday School will be collecting non-perishable food items to go to our local Food bank. Please place any donations in the boxes in the main hallway and in the sanctuary. Thank you.
