At our January Session meeting, we read and discussed
Psalm 78, verses 1-4, and I asked our ruling elders the question,
“For what would you like to be remembered by our congregation?”
The words, “faithfulness” and “dedication” were often mentioned
at that meeting.
The Bible tells us that it is not necessarily the brilliant or
highly educated person that God especially blesses. It is the person
who is faithful. Our faithfulness to God is tested in the daily course
of living. No Christian is perfect, but our dedication to our faith
can set a strong example for others. The Scriptures offer several
characteristics of faithfulness:
FAITHFULNESS TO THE CHURCH: We belong to God’s
family because of what Christ did for us on the cross. Out of
gratitude to Him, and to “encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:25)
we should make church attendance a top priority.
FAITHFULNESS WITH OUR TIME: In Paul’s letter to
the Ephesians 5:16, he urges the flock to “make the most of the
time” that we have been given. Each day is a treasured gift, and
people who love God will redeem the time available for the Lord’s
service.
FAITHFULNESS WITH MATERIAL RESOURCES: Jesus
says in Luke 16:13: “You cannot serve God and wealth.” God
expects us to use the material gifts we have received to enhance
His blessings for all creation.
FAITHFULNESS IN SMALL THINGS: In Luke 16:10 we
learn, “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful in much.”
How we respond to daily responsibilities is a measure of character.
With little things, God is testing us to see if He can count on us.
One day we will give account for our lives. Let us encourage each
other to be faithful in every responsibility. Please make it a point
to attend our annual congregational and corporation meetings on
February 9 during worship, to learn the “State of the Church” and
support and elect new church officers. Each member counts!
Blessings,
