Yard Sales are Biblical!
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity….” Ephesians 5:15-16a
We all know that "making the most of our time” is important. The expression recalls the distinction between the Greek words, chronos (chronological time) and kairos (the moment). We want to live in kairos, not chronos. Every minute has to count! This is the meaning of the Apostle Paul's expression in this passage from his letter to the Ephesians: "Redeem the kairos. Strike while the iron is hot! Reach for the brass ring."
Many people in our congregation love yard sales. I’m one of them. Our home has some amazing bargains that we “scored” at yard sales!
One morning there was a yard sale. Scott and Carol, the couple running it, had priced everything at a dollar. A customer asked, "How much is this Partridge Family Board Game?" Scott responded, "It’s just $1. Everything's $1."
The customer asked, "How much is this Smurf tablecloth?" Carol answered, "It's $1. Everything's $1."
After a few similar conversations, the customer spotted a salad bowl, and said, "Wow, this is beautiful. How much do you want for it?" Carol responded, "That's a limited edition Whittington bowl from the late 18th century. Only two are still in existence. It was in the home of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. It's $1." Excitedly, the customer handed over a dollar and walked away holding the salad bowl.
Saturday activities need to be worth our time and effort. We have twenty-four hours each day. We spend a lot of time, and money, on frivolous things, yet we are offered priceless opportunities, such as time we can spend with God. The "price" for an hour with him is the same as the cost of an hour wasted.
Our church will host an indoor yard sale on Saturday, April 20, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Because of limited storage space, we cannot accept merchandise for sale until after Easter; please call the church office before you drop off items. (No large furniture or appliances, please.) Pricing won’t be “everything for a dollar.” Some items—and some experiences— are worth much more. A chili cook-off and pie contest will follow the yard sale, from 1-3 p.m. Join us for priceless bargains, plenty of good eating, and fellowship!
Blessings,
Pastor Joyce
